What is a wiki?
A wiki is a type of website that allows the visitors to contribute and edit the content. This allows for collaboration and a higher level of peer review. In some instances, any visitor can edit the site, but in professional wikis such as wikikidney.org, one must apply to become a contributor.
The actual content of this site is in the public domain. Therefore, one should never submit copyrighted intellectual property, and contributors must be on the honor system regarding this rule. This is true of all wikis. Links to other websites are permissible, of course. but, the content in these links may be copyrighted. Submitted content is subject to editing, review and updating.
This wiki has been developed by The Nephron Information Center for the renal community of doctors and allied health personnel, industry, payors, CMS, patients and their families. It does not replace giant repository sites such as nephron.org or outstanding content sites such as aakp.org, but empowers readers to contribute, discuss and share in the expansion of knowledge that frankly, is essemtoa; to the successful application of care to patients with kidney disease.
Its success depends only upon its being bidirectional - You contribute and you use.
Who is eligible to contribute?
You. yes, you. Qualified members of the medical profession and stakeholders each have something to contribute to this wiki. Medical articles need to be well referenced or contain suggested readings.
Wikipedia has a variety of contributors, and is the largest and most widely used encyclopedia in the world. Likewise, this wiki has a wide range of subjects and topics. We all have special interests, skills and our areas of expertise and interest.
How to contribute
To directly contribute, one needs an account. Please e-mail Dr. Fadem for account privileges. Once you have an account you will be able to see how to construct an article. As this wiki grows, others will have rights to issue accounts.
Remember, to issue an account and to have an account means just that - you are accountable. Others must read what you are writing. Also, what you write is subject to being edited or deleted without cause. However, articles that are not authenticated or are totally self serving will not last long in this environment. That is the nature of the wiki environment.
This is the same software as wikipedia.org. If you have contributed to wikipedia, you are already familiar with what you will need to do. Each page of a wiki began as a text box. At the top are a series of icons that enable the user to add peculiar-looking characters like "*" or "[" to the text. Each one of these characters has meaning, and once you get used to these annoying characters, they are actually quite helpful.

Being listed as a contributor
You can simply use the signature stamp above to list yourself as a contributor. We envision placing the website page of each contributor on our main page, and as the site grows have a special section for contributors.
